Students learn Math Skills that will help them to function in the community and settings they will be in upon graduation from high school. Students learn to count change using the Touch Money Method. This method enables students to count various amounts of change up to and beyond one dollar by visualizing touch points on the coins. Students are also provided with cue cards to assist in making purchases using "dollar" amounts. This is called a "Next Dollar Cue Card". Students carry this cue card easily in their wallet and can access it at quickly when making a purchase. Often times, students become so familiar with the card that with familiar amounts they no longer need the cue card. Students learn the skill in math class and are then given taught the even more important skill of generalization to a variety of settings in the community (i.e. grocery stores, restaurants). For some students methods that provide opportunities for independence and participation are implemented. Students use picture coded money envelopes with pre-determined money amounts inside that cover the cost of purchases. Students are able to make purchases independently by identifying the correct envelope and taking the money out to pay. Students also use coin cards to match coins for familiar money amounts such as bus fare. This provides students the opportunity to participate with independence and be proud of their accomplishments. Below are examples of students using the next dollar method, money envelope and money card matching.
